Indian Summer
South Coast Repertory Theater
March 5, 2009

About the Show:
South Coast Repertory explores an important time in California history with the revival of a tale that captured the imaginations of school children and educators and became one of the most popular Educational Touring Productions.
Based on the true story of Thomas Jefferson Mayfield, who spent his formative years with the Choinumne (chu-wan’na-me) tribe, Indian Summer illuminates the relationship between early settlers and Native Americans while providing a direct link to elementary school curriculum.
As Tom is introduced to people different from himself, young audiences will learn along with him. Like Tom, they’ll come to appreciate the relationship between people and the land that nourishes them, to understand traditional beliefs and values and to share in the wonders of nature. This bright and lively musical highlights an important time in California history as it teaches a valuable lesson in ethnic diversity.
Directly supports the California State Frameworks for History-Social Science, English-Language Arts and Visual and Performing Arts

Bianca (5yrs.): I loved it too, pretty music.
Mom: We truly enjoyed it. He was funny, informative, and
I love that he incorporated Spanish too. It was a great experience!! THANK YOU.
From: CS in Mission Viejo - “Wonderful! We thoroughly enjoyed the harp concert performed by Mr. Ortiz. The music was beautiful and vibrant, the personal history of the performer was humorous and engaging, and the geography lesson was given in a fun thus memorable way. My kids talked about it for half an hour when Dad got home and we pulled out the atlas and looked up all the places that had been mentioned at the presentation. This was a first-class assembly, made all the more enjoyable because it was local and affordable.”
We enjoyed the musical event with Alfredo Ortiz very much. He was engaging and entertaining as he wove his personal story, history, and music appreciation into his presentation. He kept the kids interacting and eager to listen to his music and his story. I definitely feel it was time and money well spent. Thank you for offering this presentation!
Anne Thompson
Amy, my mom and I enjoyed the Alfredo Ortiz concert tremendously. He was very informative, his stories were hilarious, and his music was awesome! We even traveled around South America with him. He kept us all very much entertained and smiling. Thank you, BEE, for a wonderful afternoon field trip.
Lydia Sheer, Amy Sheer and Rachel Davis
My three girls and “I happened upon” the Alfredo Ortiz show while viewing the fossils at the Laguna Hills Community Center. As homeschoolers, we gratefully joined BEE and the show on the spot. We all enjoyed Mr. Ortiz’ excellent harp concert, filled with beautiful music. It was also educational to learn about his home country, Cuba, as well as the South American countries where he later settled. My six-year-old daughter was thrilled that Mr. Ortiz permitted her and the other children to play his harp at the end of the concert. My four- and six-year-old daughters were drawing pictures of harps the following day and we continue to enjoy listening to his CD, “South American Suite for Harp and Orchestra.”
Lois, Annie, Alice & Amy Cunningham
Alfredo Rolando Ortiz’ show exceeded my expectations. He connected with the kids during his interactive performance, which was very educational, yet fun and multi-sensory. The music was beautiful and the songs short and varied enough to keep the kids’ attention. The geography lessons came to life as he shared about his life living in different countries.
Sofia Peterson, Mission Viejo
About The Show:
Alfredo's personal life stories bring to the students his adventures of migration, hardship and success, including his birth in Cuba and his travel to Venezuela as a child, where he learned the Venezuelan folk harp from a school friend. He then learned the Paraguayan harp and immigrated to Colombia, where, thanks to his music, he became a medical doctor. The internationally acclaimed harpist, composer and author is also the winner of a GOLD RECORD in South America. He interweaves his true-life adventure stories with spectacular music from several countries, music composed to the birds, the crops - even music improvised in the delivery room during the birth of his second daughter!
